Yves Congar (a liberal and heretical theologian who played a significant role at Vatican II) acknowledges that a new understanding of “ecumenism” and the Church was being pushed at Vatican II.
Yves Congar: “I see that there is a profound ambiguity underlying the same word ‘ecumenism,’ between those who see only reunion with the Church (favored by charity) and those who see something quite new ahead of all of us, that calls for a profound reform.” (My Journal Of The Council [Nov. 21, 1963], Liturgical Press, 2012, p. 445).
The new ecclesiology clashed with the Church’s traditional teaching.
Yves Congar: “We are observing a confrontation between two ecclesiologies. The after-effects of the pontificate of Pius XII are being challenged. And, beyond them, the regime that has prevailed since the Gregorian Reform, on the basis of the identification of the Roman Church with the universal Catholic Church. The Churches are alive, they are there, represented and gathered together in Council, they are asking for an ecclesiology of Church and Churches, and not just of the papal monarchy…” (My Journal Of The Council [Nov. 6, 1963], Liturgical Press, 2012, p. 415).
Yves Congar: “For this hard work is based on the following idea, formally accepted by Athenagoras [“Orthodox”], and, basically, by Paul VI – that is to say: the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church are the same Church…” (My Journal Of The Council [June 2, 1964], Liturgical Press, 2012, p. 535).
